The journey of the gravel gardens

This project involved a complete garden transformation. Working with a clay soil, dry, windy conditions and a sun-baked slope, we created a

"Beth Chatto -style" Mediterranean gravel garden. We laid meandering paths and used Yorkshire-stone steps.

The rock-edged beds, containing improved soil, were filled with a selection of drought-tolerant plants. Finally, we mulched with gravel.

We also included a rock-lined stream to collect rainwater flowing down the hill.

The plants have been in for two winters and seem to be very happy in their habitat.

A compacted drive and surrounding area have been converted into a series of magical

dry beds, with year-round interest. Ariane has delivered a stunning planting which is sympathetic to the site and existing garden.
